Roof slate is a durable rock material that has been used for centuries. It is blasted by powder explosions and then split into four to nine inch pieces. The slate is then hand split into individual slates for use. They are available in a variety of colors, thickness, and sizes. Slate is fireproof,  and practically non-absorbent which generally allows snow to slide right off. Regardless of climate conditions, slate can last up to 100 plus years depending on grade of slate.
