THATCH ROOF A UNIQUE OPTION
Thatch roofs are a roofing method that uses dry straw, palm leaves or water reeds to create a natural roof covering. Thatch are fairly durable and beautiful, giving structures a unique look. There are a few precautions that should be taken in order to prolong the life span of the thatch roof. Its recommended to intall a mesh netting to keep birds and other rodents away. One of the main concerns are Tiki Hut Caterpillars. In order to prevent these critters from doing damage to thatch, its important to apply insecticides containing Bifenthrin to both sides of the palm thatch before assembling the tiki hut roof.
Pictured here is a palm-frond roof over a seating area at one of Pompano Beach ocean side restaurants. Palm-frond roofs often are used in these warmer climates over picnic areas, patios, pool houses and many other structures. Here the thatched roof is installed by fastening the palm leaves by hammer. However, others have installed by simply a chord method. While others have weaved the leaves and then installed to the frame. Although it makes a fun tropical appearance, these type of roofs may not last as long as other known roof options.
